Lagos educator who was arrested for assaulting a three-year-old student was granted ₦200,000 bail

 

At the Ogba Magistrate Court on Thursday, Magistrate M.O. Kusanu arraigned Stella Nwadigo, a teacher at Christ-Mitots International School in

Ikorodu, Lagos State, for physically abusing a three-year-old student named Abayomi Michael.

Nwadigo entered a not guilty plea to the allegations against her after being arrested after a widely shared video purported to show her repeatedly hitting the child during a session.

In a statement posted on X (previously Twitter), the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency verified the development.

According to the announcement, "All parties involved in the ongoing, widely publicized case of child abuse appeared at the Ogba Magistrate Court today, January 9, 2024."

Magistrate M.O. Kusanu was given the case. The suspect was read two charges and entered a not guilty plea.

Nwadigo's defense attorney requested bail throughout the proceedings, and the court granted it at ₦200,000 with two substantiated sureties.

The agency also stated that the case has been postponed until January 18, 2024, for trial, and that the suspect has been placed under remand in a detention facility.

Since the video went viral, the case has generated a great deal of controversy, with many people demanding harsher punishments for educators proven to have abused their students.
